Hello, my name is Greg Mecklem. I’m running for the
Washington County Commission in District 4. I farm in
Helvetia, Oregon. I’m a native Oregonian
and I remember Celilo Falls on the Columbia, large
schools of spring Chinook on the Willamette, and rich
farm fields stretching the length and breadth of the
Willamette and Tualatin Valleys. We still have a
beautiful, bountiful county, but it’s under assault by
poorly planned development. This poor planning has
enormous costs to us in clean water and air, natural
resources, traffic congestion and tax increases. We
must plan more wisely and with greater vision, giving
citizens a stronger voice in important decisions.
We must protect family farms, forests, and clean water and revitalize towns and neighborhoods.
With nearby working farms, forests and natural areas, we all have better access to
fresh local food, recreation, and nature. Farms, forests, and scenic attractions support stable
economies in nearby towns. Farmers are close to markets and supplies. Working together,
we’ll design changes so shopping, health care, parks and schools are only a walk, bike, or transit-
ride away from our homes and jobs.
We can attract clean, healthy, innovative industry and good jobs to these attractive
revitalized communities. We must invest scarce tax dollars wisely, rebuilding to encourage
renewable energy and energy-efficient buildings near public transit. Young families and
businesses need good education and training, access to health services, and opportunities
for advancement.
I’ve been a physician, forest manager, farmer, and business owner
during the past 30 years. I know we can restore open, responsive
government to Washington County. We need to value citizens’ views
and knowledge, and involve them in all stages of planning.
Together, we can make a difference for ourselves and future
generations!
